The Canisius men's lacrosse team will play host to Northeast Conference champion Robert Morris Wednesday in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship, it was revealed during the selection show Sunday evening on ESPNU.
The winner of Wednesday's contest between the Golden Griffins (8-8) and the Colonials (12-4) will face No. 1 overall seed Maryland in the tournament's first round Sunday, May 13. That game will be played in College Park, Md., and will be televised live on ESPNU.
Canisius captured the program's third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title in dramatic fashion against Detroit Mercy on Saturday, scoring twice in the final 2:38 of regulation to force overtime before sophomore Mathieu Boissonneault ended the game just six seconds into the extra session after intercepting a pass during a Titans clearing attempt and depositing into the empty cage for the game winner.
Robert Morris is making its first appearance in the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship after posting a 9-8 overtime victory against top-seed Saint Joseph's in the NEC title game Saturday in Philadelphia.
The Griffs and the Colonials will meet for the second time this season after the two squared off at the Demske Sports Complex on April 10. Robert Morris' James Scane scored with 2:10 remaining in the fourth quarter to break a 9-9 tie and propel the Colonials to an 11-9 triumph. The victory gave the Colonials a 6-5 edge over the Griffs in the all-time series that dates back to the 2005 season.
