College basketball roundup: Bonnies shut down Oklahoma State; Niagara men, Canisius women fall

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mika Adams-Woods scored 17 points, Assa Essamvous had 13 points and seven rebounds, and St. Bonaventure beat Oklahoma State 66-64 on Thursday night in the Legends Classic.

Adams-Woods made a 3-pointer with 4:50 remaining — the final field goal for the Bonnies — to take a 58-54 lead. He added two free throws with just over a minute left to tie it at 62-all.

Quion Williams gave Oklahoma State the lead with 37.6 seconds left on a contested layup. But the Cowboys fouled Daryl Banks III on a long 3-pointer at the other end, leading to three free throws for a 65-64 lead.

Oklahoma State guard Javon Small drove the baseline for a reverse layup, but the ball hit the bottom of the backboard and Noel Brown secured the rebound before getting fouled. Brown missed St. Bonaventure's first field goal of the second half — in 12 attempts — but made the second. Small had a good look at a step-back 3-pointer at the buzzer but it rattled out.

Banks finished with 14 points and Chad Venning scored 10 for St. Bonaventure (2-1).

St. Bonaventure went scoreless for nearly four minutes near the end of the first half before Adams-Woods made a layup with 38 seconds left for a 30-29 lead at the break. Adams-Woods had 10 points in the first half. The Bonnies didn't score for over six minutes in the second half before going on a 14-1 run to take a 49-46 lead on a three-point play by Banks.

Eric Dailey Jr. led Oklahoma State (1-2) with 15 points. John-Michael Wright added 14 points.

Up next: St. Bonaventure will play Friday at 7 p.m. against the winner of Thursday night's Auburn-Notre Dame game.

Niagara men

Noel Coleman scored 21 points as Hawaii beat Niagara 92-73 on Thursday night in Honolulu.

Coleman shot 7 for 12 (3 for 7 from 3-point range) and 4 of 5 from the free throw line for the Rainbow Warriors (2-0). Bernardo da Silva scored 14 points, going 5 of 9 and 4 of 8 from the free throw line. JoVon McClanahan had 14 points and finished 6 of 8 from the field.

The Purple Eagles (0-3) were led in scoring by Braxton Bayless, who finished with 20 points. Niagara also got 11 points from Kwane Marble II. Quandre Bullock also had nine points.

Canisius women

The Canisius women's basketball on the road at Colgate to take on the Raiders. 

The Griffins, leading three out of the four quarters of regulation tonight, but couldn't hang on to the lead as the Raiders ended up coming back from a 17-point deficit to win 61-55 in overtime. 

Canisius seemed as if they were on track to win, with a seven-point lead after one, expanding it to 15 after two, even taking an 11-point deficit into the fourth, but allowed Colgate to rack up 32 points in the second half to tie the game up late in the fourth sending it to overtime.

Colgate held the Griff's to four points in the overtime period, paving the way to a 2-0 start to the season for the Raiders.

Forward Sisi Eleko led the way for Canisius Thursday with 20 points, going 7 of 15 on field goals and totaling 11 rebounds. She now leads the team in points so far this season with 39. 

Up next: Canisius will host D'Youville on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Koessler Athletic Center.
