College basketball roundup: Purple Eagles soar, Golden Griffins fall on road

Led by Harlan Obioha's 21 points, the Niagara Purple Eagles defeated the Manhattan Jaspers 81-67 on Friday night. The Purple Eagles moved to 5-8 with the victory.

THE BRONX, N.Y. — Harlan Obioha had 21 points in Niagara's 81-67 victory against Manhattan on Friday night.

Obioha also contributed 16 rebounds for the Purple Eagles (5-8, 1-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Braxton Bayless added 20 points while going 8 of 12 and 4 of 4 from the free throw line, and he also had seven assists. Kwane Marble II had 11 points and shot 4 of 5 from the field and 3 for 4 from the line.

Shaquil Bender scored 30 points and made five 3-pointers for the Jaspers (4-8, 1-2). Seydou Traore added 11 points and six rebounds for Manhattan. Briggs McClain also had nine points.

Canisius men's basketball

Led by George Tinsley's 18 points, the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins 74-69 on Friday night. The Mountaineers are now 6-8 on the season, while the Golden Griffins fell to 6-7.

Tinsley also added seven rebounds for the Mountaineers (6-8, 2-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). Dakota Leffew scored 12 points and added seven rebounds. Dallas Hobbs shot 4 for 9, including 1 for 4 from beyond the arc to finish with 11 points.

Tre Dinkins led the Golden Griffins (6-7, 1-2) in scoring, finishing with 18 points. Frank Mitchell added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Canisius. Siem Uijtendaal also had 12 points and three steals.
