College basketball: Canisius men win, Niagara men lose as MAAC play starts

Both schools opened conference play at home Friday night.

BUFFALO, N.Y. —

Quinnipiac at Canisius

Tre Dinkins' 21 points helped Canisius defeat Quinnipiac 93-73 on Friday night in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's basketball opener.

Dinkins added five rebounds and five assists for the Golden Griffins (5-3). Siem Uijtendaal added 20 points while shooting 8 for 17, including 4 for 8 from the arc, and he also had six rebounds and three steals. TJ Gadsden had 17 points and shot 6 for 10 (2 for 3 from 3-point range) and 3 of 3 from the free throw line.

The Bobcats (5-2) were led in scoring by Alexis Reyes, who finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Paul Otieno added 12 points for Quinnipiac. Richie Springs also had nine points.

These two teams both play Sunday. Canisius hosts Saint Peter's and Quinnipiac visits Niagara.

St. Peter's at Niagara

Michael Houge scored 19 points as Saint Peter's beat Niagara 72-67 on Friday night.

Houge added nine rebounds for the Peacocks (2-4). Latrell Reid scored 15 points while finishing 6 of 7 from the floor. Roy Clarke was 2 of 3 shooting and 2 of 4 from the free throw line to finish with seven points.

Yaw Obeng-Mensah led the way for the Purple Eagles (1-4) with 20 points and seven rebounds. Braxton Bayless added 15 points and two steals for Niagara. Ahmad Henderson II also put up 14 points and two steals.

Both teams play again on Sunday. Saint Peter's visits Canisius and Niagara hosts Quinnipiac.
