Canisius women's basketball coach accepts top job at Eastern Michigan

The Golden Griffins won 32 games in 3 seasons under Nusseibeh, most recently finishing 17-14 last season. That included an 11-9 mark in MAAC play.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — First Canisius University announced on March 16 that Reggie Witherspoon’s time as men's basketball coach at the school had come to an end.

Now it's women's basketball coach Sahar Nusseibeh, who is leaving to take the head coaching job at Eastern Michigan, a Mid-American Conference school. Nusseibeh spent three seasons at Canisius.

"We hired Sahar here in the summer of 2021 to reenergize our women’s basketball program, and she has done that," Canisius Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation Bill Maher said in a statement Thursday. "During her time leading our program, she has improved the team steadily while also being a positive influence within the athletic department, our campus and within the Buffalo community."

The Golden Griffins won 32 games in three seasons under Nusseibeh, most recently going 17-14 last season. That included an 11-9 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.

"Sahar was a tremendous mentor to the young women in our basketball program and she worked extremely hard to reconnect with our women’s basketball alumnae. We are grateful for her contributions to Canisius and wish her well in the next chapter of her coaching career," Maher said.

A national search is now underway.

"I am confident that the next leader of our women’s basketball program will help continue the upward trajectory of our women’s basketball program, both on and off the court," Maher said.
