Sabres season ticket holders must get a license to sell tickets

Season ticket holders who resell the majority of their tickets on secondary markets will have to obtain a $5,000 license.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Sabres announced some changes to their season-ticket-holder policy for the coming season.

Over the last few weeks, the Sabres have been sending out memos to select season ticket holders saying that they would have to obtain a $5,000 license from the state if they wanted to renew their season tickets for next season.

The memo only went out to about 1% of season ticket holders, whom the Sabres have identified as fans who have been selling the majority of their season tickets on secondary markets like StubHub and Ticketmaster.

A spokesperson from the Sabres told 2 On Your Side: "This is all to stay compliant with the NYS Arts & Cultural Affairs Law that impacts resellers."

The law, according to the New York State Division of Licensing Services, requires resellers to obtain a $5,000 license in order to resell their tickets and defines resellers as "a person, firm or corporation who resells or engages in the business of reselling any tickets. It refers to anyone who is buying tickets with the primary purpose of turning a profit.

In the case of the Sabres' new ticket policy, those season ticket holders that have been selling the majority of their tickets would be viewed essentially the same as a ticket scalper or the resale sites themselves like StubHub and Ticketmaster and would, therefore, need a license.

That only refers to this small number of ticket holders. This rule would not apply if you can't make it to tomorrow night's game or even a couple of the games or even the Toronto Maple Leafs game and put your tickets up on one of these sites.

For the small number of ticket holders that this does apply to, they have until April 8 to secure their license and retain their tickets.
