Two local women are New York lottery millionaires

Two big local lottery winners claimed their prizes today.

BUFFALO, N.Y.-- Two big local lottery winners claimed their prizes Friday.

Maryanne Nowak of Cheektowaga won a million dollars on a scratch off ticket. Amy Mc Gavis won a million dollars in the massive Powerball jackpot that took place earlier this month.

McGavis is a Dunkirk resident and says she won $14 dollars on a scratch off ticket and was back at the store to claim that, when she realized she won a whole lot more on the Powerball!

“She gave me my $14 dollars and I said, ‘well, uh, here are my Powerball tickets. Can you check them?’” said McGavis.

“And she did and the third Powerball ticket came up and bells and whistles and everything else went off!” added McGavis.

She has a big family to share her winnings with. In addition to her husband Paul, she has 7 kids, 20 grandchildren and 31 great-grand children.

Maryanne Nowak said she actually scratched off her ticket around 3 in the morning, but that didn't stop her excitement.

"I just was ecstatic, I was screaming in my house,” said Nowak.

“My poor neighbors! It's like middle of the night, so 7:30 in the morning some friends came over and they validated that it was a winner," added Nowak.

The New York Lottery says there were a total of 7, one-million dollar prize winners in Erie County in 2015.
