Ceremony marks closing of 'Before and After Again' memorial art exhibit

"The AKG belongs to Buffalo and Buffalo belongs to AKG, so it'd be unnatural if we didn't participate or share in the grief of our community," Shauku said.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — It was an evening of emotions at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum.

Friday night the museum held a closing ceremony for the 5/14 memorial art exhibit, "Before and After Again," made in honor of the victims and survivors of the Tops mass shooting.

The Director of Community Engagement at the AKG, Keiah Shauku, talked about the exhibit with 2 On Your Side.

"When we think about grief and memory and imagination, this is an invitation to explore all the aspects. So it's not just simply heaviness," Shauku said. "Memories can spark all sorts of things, joy, and delight, and so it's the art of remembering that can connect us with a loved one that we may have lost. So that's the beauty of this experience, it's an exploration of feelings."

She shared that this exhibit taking place at the AKG helps them connect with the community on a human level.

"The AKG belongs to Buffalo and Buffalo belongs to AKG, so it'd be unnatural if we didn't participate or share in the grief of our community," Shauku said.

Although it was the closing ceremony for the exhibit, it will still be open until Monday.
