Wyoming County officials identify some victims in fatal crash

Three people died, including a 4-year-old girl.

SHELDON, N.Y. — The Wyoming County Sheriff's Office has released some of the names of the victims involved in a horrific, fatal crash Sunday morning in the Town of Sheldon in Wyoming County.

Ten people were involved in that crash, many of them children. Three people died, including a 4-year-old girl.

The driver of a pick-up truck was charged.

20-year-old Richard Sawicki of Lackawanna has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide, DWI and reckless driving after police say he drove a pickup truck and smashed into a family of nine from New Jersey.

This horrific crash happened Sunday morning just before 7 in an intersection in the Town of Sheldon, Wyoming County.

Ambulance companies from nine towns and villages responded to the scene.

"Most of which was volunteer response and the volunteer response to this crash was remarkable, and it undoubtedly saved a couple more lives," Wyoming County Sheriff Greg Rudolph said.

The Wyoming County Sheriff says the family from New Jersey was in an SUV. Four adults and five children were inside.

They were on Route 20A heading to Niagara Falls.

Police say not everyone was wearing a seat belt inside the SUV and that there were no car seats or baby seats.

Sawicki was on Maxon Road and slammed right into them.

We don't know what his BAC level was.

"He was at fault from that accident, he failed to stop at a stop sign and went into the intersection the Route 20A intersection," Rudolph said.

Two women, Ondina Castro De La Cruz, 47, and Mayelin Brito-Castro, 32, died, as well as, Kiara Hernandez, 4.

Survivors of the crash in the SUV were taken to local hospitals with injuries. The children are still getting treatment, and 2 On Your Side does know an adult male has been released.

They include Reyes Rodriguez, 55, and Maria Brito-Castro, 26.

"I just want these people to know that the Town of Varysburg feels for them," Sherry Swartz of Varysburg said.

She built a memorial Monday for the victims and their family, "just showing them they're from out of town that we do care."

Sawicki was arraigned Monday and taken to Wyoming County Jail on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond.

His driver's license was suspended, and he's due back in court two weeks from now.

Police say more charges are expected but would not further elaborate on what they could be.
