BUFFALO, N.Y. — While cold weather is the issue right now, Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed a new law aimed at protecting students from extreme heat.
The legislation sets the maximum allowed temperature in classrooms across New York to 88 degrees.
The law also defines extreme heat days and actions teachers can take to relieve discomfort, such as opening the windows and providing water breaks.
Back in June, the Buffalo Parent-Teacher Organization told 2 On Your Side that classrooms got dangerously hot, adding that some students complained of heat-related symptoms like dizziness.
Days off back in June because of extreme heat impacted the schedule for New York State regents exams.
