Nowakowski hopes to run for state senate

Nowakowski said in a statement that if current state senate Tim Kennedy replaces U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins, he wants to fill the vacant 63rd district seat.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Fillmore district council member Mitch Nowakowski wants to run for state senate.

Nowakowski said in a statement that if current state senate Tim Kennedy replaces U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins, he wants to fill the vacant 63rd district seat.

He has expressed his interest to Erie County Democratic committee chairman Jeremy Zellner.

Zellner released this statement:

"At this moment Erie County Democrats are focused on endorsing Congressman Brian Higgins’ successor in the 26th Congressional District, a decision our committee will make in mid-January.

"If necessary, the selection of a candidate for the 63rd District Senate seat will take place in February prior to the circulating of petitions for the June primary.

"As I have said before, we are a party with a deep bench of talented leadership. The committee has been approached by County Legislature Chair April Baskin and Fillmore Common Councilman Mitch Nowakowski, either of whom would be an outstanding representative for Western New York in the state Senate.

"I look forward to these discussions and to working with our committee membership to make the best possible choice for the district and our entire community."
