ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Food banks, soup kitchens and food pantries throughout the state of New York are getting some help from the state.

The administration of Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced the state is awarding nearly $37 million to support eight regional food banks and more than 2,600 food pantries and soup kitchens.

Together, the different anti-hunger organizations provide about 216 million meals each year to struggling New Yorkers.

Federal statistics indicate that more than 2 million New York residents cannot always afford to meet basic nutritional needs.
