USS Liberty memorial features 2 WNY sailors

There is now a new monument in their honor near the Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia, which was the ship's home port.

NORFOLK, Va. — We have a follow-up to our story from Memorial Day on the U.S. sailors, including two from Western New York, who were killed during an attack by Israel in 1967 on a U.S. Navy ship called the USS Liberty.

There is now a new monument in their honor near the Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia, which was the ship's home port.

This monument is now in place at a VFW post in Norfolk and it carries the names of Frederick James Walton of Niagara Falls and Richard W. Keene of Batavia who were among the 34 sailors killed as the Navy intelligence ship was off the coast of Israel.

It also displays information about the June 1967 attack, which the Israeli government claimed was accidental, including a metal piece of the ship which was riddled with cannon fire from Israeli jets.

Survivors and families are still demanding answers from the U.S. government.

The USS Little Rock,  which is now a museum ship here in Buffalo,  responded to assist the USS Liberty following the attack.
