Flags at Forest Lawn Cemetery honor veterans who passed

Erie County's American Legion held its annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Forest Lawn Cemetery while paying tribute to fallen servicemembers.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Many Western New Yorkers are paying their respects to those whose lives were lost while serving our country.

On Memorial Day, several ceremonies were held across our area to honor those who paid the ultimate price.

A solemn tradition took place at one of Western New York's most historic sites.

Thousands of flags were placed on the graves of veterans buried in the Field of Valor' and those in the American Legion section of Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo. The Erie County American Legion then held its annual Memorial Day Service at the site.

"This means the world to me," said Mark Schultz of Buffalo. "This is my grandson right here. We've been doing it for about 10 years, and he knows when I'm gone, he takes over."

"Just making  making sure that our kids are instilled with the proper values," said Erie County American Legion Commander Ted Balbierz.

This year, Forest Lawn also welcomed people to a military exhibit, which showcased military uniforms and artwork.
