Western New York community members protest over Kolkata rape-murder case in India

Protestors around the world and here in Western New York want justice for the victim of the rape-murder case in India.

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — A young doctor in India was raped and murdered inside the hospital where she worked. The wave of outrage that's followed has reached all the way to Williamsville.

Protestors around the world and here in Western New York, want justice for the victim of the rape-murder case in India. They also want to see changes that protect healthcare workers there from violence.

This protest was organized by 'Sanskriti Buffalo' which is a 40-year-old organization in Western New York.

Organizers say that all of the people who showed up at this recent protest are from, or have ties to Kolkata India, which is where this incident happened.

According to the Associated Press, the attack happened at a state-run government hospital. Protestors are demanding better and safer working conditions in India.

Protestors, particularly women, are also demanding justice for the victim who was a doctor in training.

Shyamashree Sinaj says she has faced similar working situations over 20 years ago as a trainee physician in Kolkata, in a different medical college but in the same city. She's hoping that those in power who make decisions do something about it.

"I felt like I was in her shoes and what would I have done had it happened to me. That is very moving for me even after so many years of living in this country and working. I have worked here. I have also trained here and I have seen so much of a difference in the training situation and the living situation for trainee physicians here. I have been a resident here. The situation here is far different and we need at least a stimulation of that in our country," Sinaj said.

Protestors want to make sure a crime like this never happens again.

Earlier this week, India's top court set up a national task force of doctors who will make recommendations on the safety of healthcare workers.

This comes days after the rape and killing of the young doctor sparked outrage and protests like these around the world and right here in Williamsville.
