GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Greensboro man said he saw a stranger steal his trailer from his driveway.
He watched it happen live on his home security camera while he was away at work.
Nathan Lerman said he lived in his neighborhood on Maywood Street for two decades.
He left his trailer in his driveway overnight on June 12.
He said his riding lawnmower was on it because he had plans to get it serviced the next day.
Lerman never thought the trailer would get stolen the night before.
"Criminals don't care, they don't care about how hard people work to get the stuff they buy," he said.
Lerman said he got a notification around 1 a.m. that someone was in his driveway.
Surveillance video shows a stranger latching Lerman's trailer onto a pick-up truck and driving away.
"In the blink of an eye $13,000 gone, it's just crazy to me," he shared.
Lerman said the lawnmower was not a leisure purchase. He got it at the beginning of the year and used it as a side hustle to help provide for his family.
"I work 50 hours a week and I'm still making ends meet. I'm a single dad and I have an 11-year-old daughter," Lerman explained, "Kids are expensive and having that extra cash has helped catch up to bills and buy the stuff that she wants."
Lerman is left with an empty driveway and no extra source of income. He has homeowners insurance but the claim process has only just begun.
"$13,000 is a lot of money for a lot of people and I have to work really hard to get that. If I didn't have insurance, it would have been devastating," he said.
Greensboro police said this is an active investigation. They have not told us if a suspect has been identified or if any arrests have been made in this case.
Lerman said he is working on improving his security measures at home.
