New York observes 1 year since the Hamas attack on Israel

Flags on all New York State buildings will be flown at half-staff Monday. State landmarks, including Niagara Falls, will be lit in yellow.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Flags on all New York State buildings will be flown at half-staff Monday to mark one year since the attack on Israel by Hamas.

State landmarks, including Niagara Falls, will also be lit in yellow to show solidarity with hostages still in captivity.

In a statement, Gov. Kathy Hochul said New York stands with Israel today, and every day.

“One year after the horrific atrocities committed against the people of Israel, my heart goes out to the victims and their families,” Hochul said in a statement.

“New York stands with Israel — today and every day. As the home of the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, we will do everything in our power to defend against the forces of hatred and stand firmly against those who perpetuate it.”

There will also be additional security and surveillance at "critical infrastructure hubs, synagogues, yeshivas, mosques, community centers and other at-risk areas," the governor's office said.

Landmarks that will be illuminated Monday include:

  • Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge
  • Kosciuszko Bridge
  • The H. Carl McCall SUNY Building
  • State Education Building
  • Alfred E. Smith State Office Building
  • Empire State Plaza
  • State Fairgrounds – Main Gate & Expo Center
