NEW YORK — Hyundai and Kia are recalling a combined 147,000 electric vehicles because of charging units that could become damaged and increase the risk of a crash.
The recall affects certain Hyundai Ioniq and Genesis models, and newer-model Kia EV6 cars.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Integrated Charging Control Unit may become damaged and stop charging the 12-volt battery in the vehicle, resulting in a loss of drive power and potentially increased crash risk.
More than 98,000 Hyundai vehicles and 48,000 Kia vehicles are affected.
Dealers will inspect and replace the ICCU and its fuse if needed, and update the software for free. Owners who are affected by the recall will receive a letter in the mail with more information. Those are expected to be mailed April 29 for Kia owners and May 14 for Hyundai owners.
Owners can also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
