BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. — CBS News has reported that 46 people have been confirmed dead in North Carolina as a result of Helene. Across the country, more than 100 people have died.
During a press conference Sunday afternoon, Buncombe County officials confirmed that at least 30 people in the county have died because of Hurricane Helene.
Helene swept across western North Carolina on Friday, bringing heavy rain and winds that led to widespread flooding in the state. Some areas suffered minor damage, while others have been almost completely wiped away.
There are still over 100,000 without power in Buncombe County, according to ReadyNC.gov.
Below are the open emergency shelters in Buncombe County:
- AB Tech Conference Center, 16 Fernihurst Dr, Asheville, NC 28801 (Please use Victoria Road Entrance.)
- Medical Emergency Shelter (for individuals who are dependent on medical equipment requiring power) located at 10 Genevieve Cir, Asheville, NC 28801.
- WNC Agriculture Center- Fanning Bridge Road. This location is full.
The City of Asheville announced Sunday they are partnering with Verizon to deliver temporary cell service to those impacted by Helene. The sattelite trailer is located at the Family Justice Center at 35 Woodfin Place in Asheville.
Asheville is still in a city-wide curfew from 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
