Chalis Barrett's life was changed forever in August when her 20-year-old daughter, Madison, was involved in a rollover car accident just down the road from her home.
Madison was taken by helicopter to the hospital for treatment.
"None of the interventions were working due to the trauma of the accident," said Barrett.
Chalis and her husband, James, decided to have Madison become an organ donor so she could help those in need. "It was just her. It just made sense," said Chalis.
Chalis is a nurse in Gowanda and checks the heartbeats of patients daily. However, she told 2 On Your Side that she wishes she had listened to Madison's heartbeat before saying goodbye.
"That was the one thing I always regretted was not listening one last time," said Barrett.
James worked with Unyts to bring her the Christmas present of a lifetime. The organization got in contact with the woman who received Madison's heart to have a recording made of her heartbeat.
The recording was then put in a Build-a-Bear stuffed animal for Chalis to hold onto forever.
"It happened so fast, and I just couldn't believe how fast it happened and Amanda said the stars lined up because Madison was on our side. She wanted her mom to have her heartbeat for Christmas," said James Barrett.
In a video that has been shared more than a thousand times on WNY Unyts' Facebook page you see Chalis opening the present and burst into tears when she hears the heartbeat.
"I heard my daughters heart beat, but not only that, I heard it in somebody she helped," said Chalis.
The Barretts are hoping to spread the word about why becoming an organ donor is important.
"There are so many people who can be helped by just one person. One person can save up to 100 people, and you just don't know what a difference it makes," said Chalis.
