BUFFALO, N.Y. — Local photographers can win cash and prizes for their pictures of scenic Western New York.

The WNY Southtowns Scenic Byway (WNYSSB) asks for photo submissions to be displayed during this year’s holiday season. It is the third annual photo contest which is aimed to encourage visitors to the Southtowns communities.

Last year’s contest had 120 entries; a new record stated WNYSSB.

“We promote and encourage people to explore our many terrific communities and decided that the public is the best source for examples of what the Southtowns offers,” said Byway President, Robert J. Lennartz.

There are two different entry categories. The first is the “standalone camera,” which is for photographers who use a dedicated camera and not a smartphone or tablet. The second category is smartphones and tablets. Prizes are dedicated to each category.

The first-place winner will win $150 cash and a copy of the book Nostalgic Buffalo by William C. Even. Second place receives $100 cash, and third place gets $50 cash, according to WBYSSB. All finalists’ pictures will be displayed on the silver screens at the Aurora Theatre in East Aurora.

Pictures taken in the following communities will be accepted.

  • Town Ashford
  • Town of Aurora
  • Town of Boston
  • Town of Colden
  • Town of Concord
  • Village of East Aurora
  • Village of Ellicottville

Southtowns newspaper photographers will be the judges with the entry deadline on November 30. Participants must submit their own, non-copyrighted photos and are limited to five submissions, said the WNYSSB.

Photos can be submitted on the WNYSSB website.
