E-bike injuries on the rise in WNY, especially for older adults

ECMC said they've already seen more e-bike injuries this year compared to last year.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A safety alert for people who ride e-bikes. They are being linked to more accidents, especially among older adults.

ECMC said there were 23 emergency department visits related to e-bikes in 2023. So far this year, they've nearly doubled that number when compared to last year.

In some cases, riders aren't wearing helmets. Majority of patients they treat for e-bike injuries are adults 44 and older.

"Some patients had fractures of the legs, pelvis, facial fractures, injuries, you know, blood on the brain. Obviously, there was patients who did not have helmets versus patients who have helmets. So the injuries were very board and it can affect really any part of the body," Meg Reilly MSN, RN, CEN, CCRN-K, ECMC's Vice President of critical care and emergency services, said.

Even though it's not required by law, you are encouraged to wear a helmet. You still have to follow the rules of the road.

"If they are out drinking at a bar, instead of driving, they are going to use their e-bike. You still have to follow the rules of the road. It's still incredibly dangerous to be riding an e-bike after you've been drinking. And, you can still get a DWI," North Tonawanda Police Chief Keith Glass said.

Unless there are signs that say otherwise, e-bikes are allowed on bike paths like Niawanda Park for example.

E-bike riders are also encouraged to be aware of their surroundings. Chief Glass says a lot of motorists might not know you are moving as quick as you are. Some e-bikes can go up to 20 miles per hour.
