BUFFALO, N.Y. — Mackenzie "Kenzie" Michalski, 31, a nurse practitioner originally from Fredonia, is reportedly missing in Budapest while on vacation.
She worked for several years at Buffalo General before relocating to Portland, Oregon.
She remains best friends with a group from nursing school in Buffalo. They often travel across the world together a couple of times of year.
Kenzie was scheduled to return to the United States this week.
She never checked out of the Airbnb in Budapest and never made her flight.
Her friend Brooke Adams said "even if she was going to miss the flight, she would, you know, she's still going to grab her stuff. And then she just rebooked the flight, you know, so we know her so well that that this is as soon as we found out. Cause Gretchen called me crying. Monday and the afternoon, after the Airbnb, and she called the the Embassy and the police."
Local officials have weighed in.
This is a statement from U.S. Rep. Tim Kennedy.
"This is a nightmare that no family should ever have to go through. As a father, my heart breaks for the family as they search for their daughter. My office has been in touch with the State Department and I will continue to pray for her safe return home."
The FBI is working to ping her phone.
We also received this statement from U.S. Rep. Nick Langworthy.
"The Congressman and his staff are working with Kenzie's loved ones and all relevant federal and international officials, including the State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Hungary, who are coordinating with local authorities on the investigation. Our office will continue to use every tool at our disposal to aid in the search, and we ask everyone to join us in praying for Kenzie's safe return."
Hungarian officials are working the case and there are searches underway.
Family and friends are heading to Budapest.
