Witness describes diving behind counter during Christmas Day shooting in Kenmore

An employee at Sam's Market & Deli told 2 On Your Side that the incident happened around 1:00 p.m. outside the corner store.

KENMORE, N.Y. — Kenmore Police are investigating a shooting at Kenmore Avenue and Melrose Avenue on Monday.

Authorities say an unknown assailant walked up to a small group of customers that had just exited the corner store located at 1809 Kenmore Ave at approximately 1 p.m. and started shooting.

A 23-year-old Buffalo resident was struck three times. He was transported to ECMC by ambulance and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect is still at large and was last seen running across Kenmore Ave.

An employee at Sam's Market & Deli told 2 On Your Side that the business had a front window shot out.

Husein Muedh was helping a customer in the store when he heard gunfire and dove behind the front counter for safety. The customer ran to the back of the store.

"Thank God I didn't get hurt,” he said. “They were coming. They shot right at me because I was standing like this and thank God and it was gone. I don't know it's probably behind. I don't know. They tried to find the bullet. They couldn't find the bullet."

Kenmore Police had the area around Sam’s tapped off for about two hours and another scene one street over on West Hazeltine Avenue.

Michael D’Angelo who lives nearby said he heard gunshots from his house and walked over to see what had happened.

He almost didn’t believe it.

"Just had the front door of the apartment open because it's been so nice today and heard bam bam bam bam bam bam and thought to myself, ‘Oh, wouldn't that be odd if that was gunfire.’ It was almost a joking thought considering no that wouldn't happen it's Christmas, but indeed that's what it turned out to be."

D’Angelo added that a neighbor saw someone run through a backyard and end up on W. Hazeltine. Police were later seen taking photos of a pile of clothes on that street.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Kenmore Police Department at (716) 875-1234.
