BUFFALO, N.Y. — The cost of groceries is high right now, and it's expected to keep going up. It is a real problem for most people, but could be an even bigger problem for rural communities in Western New York, and now one local organization is looking to make a difference.
The Rural Outreach Center is now making deliveries in the farthest outcrop of our community with "FreshFix", thanks to funding from Independent Health. The name of this new program is "Healthy Options at Home."
"We are looking at the whole food system it's important that farmers get paid a living wage." says Kristie Chamberlain with FreshFix. She added that it's, "also important for us that the people in the community that need and want local food is able to get it.
Families like the Druszka face geographic isolation, transportation limitations, and most recently inflation. More than 45,000 people in the rural community service area live in poverty.
Jill Druszka tells 2 on Your Side, "The cost of groceries are a ton these days. So having one free meal a week is now. And there's always enough leftovers for the kids to take to lunch the next day, so that's nice. Not having to worry about what we're gonna have for dinner at least one night a week."
