Winter driving safety reminders

Winterizing your vehicle will keep yourself and others safe this winter.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Getting ready for the upcoming winter of driving? Whether you are a native to the area or new to Buffalo snow, its helpful to remember these tips

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has sent out some safety reminders for winter driving along with reminders from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and other state agencies.

DMV Commissioner, Mark Schroeder, says making the right preparations will help keep keep everyone safe.

“Always check forecasts ahead of driving, especially during the winter. Make sure the vehicle and the headlights are clear and not covered with ice or snow, make sure your tires have adequate tread, and travel at a safe speed especially when roads are icy," Schroeder said.

Installing snow tires is a good start to winter driving preparations. The state law allows the use of snow tires from October, 16 until April, 30.

Other tips along with this include

  • Filling your windshield wiper fluid
  • Having a full gas tank
  • Making sure your heater and defroster work

State leaders also don't want people to forget to give plows room on the road as well as other emergency vehicles while driving this winter. Thruway plows travel slower than the posted speed limits at about 35 miles-per-hour so people should never follow one too closely.

"Drivers should slow down and use caution around plows. Remember to never crowd a plow. The safest place to travel is well behind the plow where the road is freshly cleared and treated. Help us help you get to your destination safely,”

In case of an emergency State Police recommend keeping a supply of water, food items, blankets and a flashlight in your vehicle in the event someone is stranded.

Other items that the state encourages you to keep in your vehicle includes jumper cables, a phone with charger and a shovel.
