WASHINGTON D.C., DC — Western New York's leaders are speaking out, after an apparent assassination attempt on Former President Trump at one of his golf courses in Florida.
In response, Republican Congressman Nick Langworthy, and Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenny called for increased security.
In a statement, Rep. Langworthy said "The recurring political violence targeting President Trump is unacceptable and deeply un-American — this is not who we are as a nation, and it cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. Unfortunately, instead of cooling tensions after the first assassination attempt in which President Trump was shot, Democrats, Kamala Harris, and the media have turned up the inflammatory rhetoric, further fueling division and violence. Given the escalating threats, I’m calling on President Biden to issue President Trump the same security levels afforded to a sitting President to ensure his safety."
Meanwhile, Rep. Tenney took to social media to say "I am relieved to hear that President Trump is safe after another attack on his life. Thank you to the courageous Secret Service agents for their swift response. We must unify to end this wave of political violence against President Trump." She later added, "It is inexplicable that this happened again. At this point, the threat level against President Trump requires the same, if not more Secret Service protection than a sitting President."
Senate Majority Leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer applauded the work of the Secret Service, saying "I was just briefed by the Acting Director of the Secret Service. I applaud the Secret Service for their quick response to ensure former President Trump’s safety. There is no place in this country for political violence of any kind. The perpetrator must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said in a statement: “I’m grateful that former President Trump is safe, and I’m thankful to the Secret Service and local law enforcement for responding swiftly. Political violence has absolutely no place in our country.”
Democratic Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz posted on X: "While more details come out, there can be no excuse for political violence in any form. Kudos to the secret service and law enforcement on the quick apprehension of a suspect in today's attempt against former President Trump and I am glad he was not hurt."
And Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul also posted on social media: "Grateful to law enforcement for their speedy response, and relieved the former president is safe after the incident at his golf course earlier today. Violence of any form is totally unacceptable — we must settle our differences with civility and respect."
