Wegmans debuts smart carts for pilot program

The smart cart technology is available at three Wegmans locations.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Wegmans is currently testing out Smart Cart and Learn Pilots in three stores in New York.

Shoppers can test out the carts at Perinton and Pittsford in Rochester and Alberta Drive in Buffalo. Customers with Shopper's Club cards are able to test out the carts at the Alberta store location.

An image of the new smart carts can be seen below.

The shopping carts are an early stage technology that hopes to offer customers an alternative way to shop in stories in the future, according to Wegmans Public & Community Relations Manager of the Buffalo Division Michele Mehaffy.

The test program is limited to only three stores to gather customer feedback and drive improvements.

"Our goal is to determine if Smart Cart Technology is a fit for the unique shopping assortment offered in our stores and if it meets the shopping needs of our customers," Mehaffy said.

As of right now, Wegmans has not shared any specifics on the next steps.
