FREDONIA, N.Y. — The Fredonia Village Board voted 4-1 Monday night to approve a 5.8% property tax hike.
The vote comes after an initial proposal for a 19% tax increase for homeowners.
Fredonia Mayor Michael Ferguson said that the initial 19% tax increase was just a starting point. He said that they brought that hike much lower by decreasing it to 5.8%.
"Most communities sit between two and three percent increases on an annual basis," Ferguson said. "When you haven't done that, and you've also exhausted your capital fund and your reserve, you have no other choice. So yes, they were outraged at 19%, but we knew that was only a starting point for us."
