Local University offers Ukrainian students full-ride scholarships

The estimated $2M donation will cover the cost of tuition, room and board at the university.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Many Ukrainian students are no longer able to pursue higher education due to displacement.

11 Ukrainian students have been offered full-ride scholarships at D'Youville University. The estimated $2M donation will cover the cost of tuition, room, and board at the university.

Other students' institutions in Ukraine have been forced to close or are operating under challenging circumstances.

That's why D'Youville donors and alumni wanted to step in and do something. Most of the students are pursuing degrees in health science. Many of them want to go back to Ukraine once the war is over to help rebuild their country.

Lorrie Clemo is the president of the university. She said that they are happy to be able to help their students get the education that they need in a safe environment.

"When the war broke out in the Ukraine. Our community came together and decided that we really wanted to do something to support the students who were planning on going to college but were unable to because it was disruptive by the war. So, we came together with our donors, with our alumni, and the support of the university itself to provide tuition, room and board, books and computers for our students and to cover all of their expenses for four years," Clemo said.

Their donors are working towards raising money to bring more Ukrainian students.

Some donors have even stepped up to support students with a variety of other costs, like medical co-pays. Other out-of-pocket health costs supported include winter clothing, and meals during breaks, like winter and summer, since their dining rooms are closed.

A set of donors are also working towards raising more money to bring more Ukrainian students to campus.
