UB students offering medical care around the globe

Students did not receive credit to travel to Belize and help provide medical supplies and potentially life-saving lessons to the poor.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — We're hearing about how University at Buffalo students reached out selflessly to help people across the globe.

Second-year medical student Rachel Yerden traveled this spring to Belize with students in the Global Surgery Student Alliance. Yerden worked with farmers to train them on how to treat serious bleeding that some of them might suffer from while working in the fields.

"I think that sometimes there's a limited amount that I can help, especially in the clinic when I'm just a med student," Yerden said. "But I think that this trip was uniquely rewarding, just because i was able to actually do something and teach. And I think people were actually like, if i wasn't there, we wouldn't have taught the class."

Yerden was not paid, and received no college credit for her work.

She brought medical supplies from a Rochester-based nonprofit called Intervol, and she plans to return to Belize in October.
