HAMBURG, N.Y. — The Town of Hamburg has announced that they have been awarded $2,785,194 through New York State's Department of Transportation TAP grant program.

The Federal Highway Administration's Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) is indented to help fund improvements and revitalize community's.

Money awarded to the town will be used for a new comprehensive multimodal system which includes the construction of new sidewalks, bike lanes, and crossings along South Park Avenue.

The money awarded also is intended to help the shopping district along South Park Ave. and will serve as the primary transition from the Town of Hamburg and Southtowns communities to the cities of Lackawanna and Buffalo.

Supervisor Randy Hoak said, “This investment will bring safer modes of travel for our residents, encourage exercise, and result in a healthier, more vibrant community. I see people walking or riding bicycles and mobility devices on this stretch of South Park every day. These are people who are getting to jobs, families that are grocery shopping, or seniors heading over to Pegasus for lunch. A safer South Park corridor will benefit residents, visitors, and businesses in our community.”

In a press release the Town of Hamburg wrote "The area targeted by the TAP grant is South Park Avenue from the Village of Hamburg line to Scranton Road. This well-traveled route lacks sidewalks, forcing pedestrians and those using alternative transportation devices to travel on the shoulder of the road. In August 2023, 26-year-old Casey Nolder lost her life while traveling this route home from her job at the Erie County Fair. Ms. Nolder was traveling north on the shoulder of South Park Avenue on a scooter when she was struck by a vehicle exiting Scranton Road."
