Tornado cleanup, power outages in Holland

After three tornadoes ripped through parts of Western New York Thursday, many communities spent Friday cleaning up.

HOLLAND, N.Y. -- After three tornadoes ripped through parts of Western New York Thursday, many communities spent Friday cleaning up.

In Holland, where a second confirmed tornado touched down, around 658 people woke up Friday morning without power and found extensive damage in the community.

The heart of the cleanup could be found on Route 16 in Holland.

One of those without power, Joy Bucknam struggled to find her words in describing what it was like to wake up Friday morning after the tornado.

"I felt like a rag doll; all of the adrenaline from yesterday had just drained from me, but walking around the property, there were a lot of trees down, there's a lot of small things to pick up, and as bad as it is, it could have been worse," said Bucknam, a 40-year Holland resident.

Dozens of cleanup crews have already flooded to Holland to clear yards, restore power lines, and in some cases, clean homes.

Among them is Scott Bashong, a Field Project Supervisor, who says crews have been going almost 24 hours.

"It's just the debris and sorting out and getting cables out and making sure there's no hazards," Bashong said. "Traffic has been an issue, this road's very busy, other than that, it's pretty much what we do every day."

Bucknam says some of the adjustments she's making Friday include dealing with her toilets having some issues, and having no air-conditioning. But for now, she's still taking in the spectacle of it all.

"I've never seen anything like this in 40 years," she said. "In fact, my dad was up yesterday surveying the property also, and in his 90 years he had never seen anything like this."

In the long run, she says she believes the overall cleanup should be manageable, and she's thankful it wasn't any worse.

As of 7 p.m. Friday, NYSEG's Outage Map showed all but nine customers in Holland should have power restored.
