BUFFALO, N.Y. — Ahead of Friday's opening ceremony for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the produce team at Tops Friendly Markets are preparing to bring home gold for a creative competition of their own.

"Back by popular demand is our Tops Produce Olympics, something our team members look forward to each time we hold this healthy competition," said Jeff Cady, vice president of produce and floral for Northeast Grocery Inc.

Staff will compete in teams to design Olympic-themed displays for different produce stands inspired by the fan-favorite sports to be featured in the upcoming summer games. "Boxing with berries," "cycling with cherries," and "weightlifting with watermelons" are a few of the categories team members will have the opportunity to compete in and model their designs after.

For decades, the Tops Produce Olympics have encouraged staff to use their creativity in spreading awareness for healthy eating habits. Team produce displays will earn points on both creative elements and effectiveness in boosting awareness for the importance of eating enough fruits and vegetables on a daily basis.

Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded to winning teams along with regional awards and photo finish prizes.
