BUFFALO, N.Y. — Daemen University’s new Saffrin Public Square now has a sizeable dedication to peace and love —an eight-foot statue of Ringo Starr’s hand making a peace sign.
The artwork was made from a casting of the Beatles drummer’s hand, and there are only two others in the world, one in Beverly Hills and one on Ringo’s property, according to the university.
Daemen board chair John Yurtchuk knows Gary Astridge, a Buffalo native and Beatles historian and curator of Starr’s drum kits. Astridge, who was working on Ringo’s Peace and Love initiative, wanted to find a way to bring the statue to Buffalo. Yurtchuk and his wife Carolyn donated the statue to Daemen, which was working to complete the new quad.
