AMHERST, NY-- The principal at Sweet Home High School was hurt Monday trying to break up a fight at the school.

In a statement posted on the district's website, Superintendent Anthony J. Day says principal Joleen Reinholz was hurt when she tried to break up a fight between four students.

Amherst police also say a school resource officer was injured trying to break up the fight.

A 16-year-old student was arrested and charged by Amherst police with felony assault.

A district spokesperson says Reinholz was at the hospital awaiting tests. Her condition is unknown.

Amherst Police are also investigating the incident.

Here is the full statement from the Superintendent:

At approximately 12 noon today - Monday, February 24 - four students were involved in an altercation in the 600 wing of the high school. In the midst of attempting to break up the altercation, building principal Joleen Reinholz was injured and required medical attention.

A number of building staff and School Resource Officer Greg Trotter responded to the situation immediately and the school district is cooperating fully with the Amherst Police Department's ongoing investigation of the incident. We take this, and every incident within one of our school buildings, very seriously and will take every step available to see that those involved receive appropriate discipline.

I am thankful for the continued work of our school community that makes Sweet Home High School a safe building for our faculty, staff, students and visitors.
