The deactivation of these majors will go into effect June 5th. After that date, the university will not recruit students for, or admit students to, these degree programs.
SUNY Fredonia reports there are 70 first majors and 22 second majors enrolled in these programs. All current students will be given the option to complete their majors at Fredonia. Teach-out plans will begin in the fall.
The university plans to keep all associated minors, as well as any classes needed for general education.
Executive Vice President and Provost Starrett stresses SUNY Fredonia is still committed to the Liberal Arts, with 80% of its undergraduate degree programs in the liberal arts.
As for faculty, Starrett says he doesn't know how many positions will be impacted, but if there are layoffs, the school will follow collective bargaining agreements.
