HAMBURG, N.Y. — A nearly mile-long stretch of Route 5 has been reopened after being closed since Thursday.
The road was reopened in both directions just before 5 a.m. Saturday.
High winds were forcing waves from Lake Erie to crash over onto the road.
Route 5 was closed from Lasalle Avenue to Big Tree Road, with the Department of Transportation constantly plowing this stretch, which kept getting battered by waves off Lake Erie.
The National Weather Service said waves on Lake Erie were between 10 to 14 feet high, and occasionally as high as 18 feet.
2 On Your Side saw strong wind from the Erie Basin Marina to Hoover Beach in Hamburg. where a lot of trees and some homes are frozen. Those waves really have been relentless all day.
Earlier Thursday, Hamburg's emergency manager, Sean Crotty, about his concerns about possible power outages.
"The big thing for us is power, the retaining of the power infrastructure, through that area and any area, for that matter, because obviously a lot of people rely on electricity for heat and the utilities for their homes," he said.
At the moment, according to the NYSEG and National Grid outage maps, power outages don't seem to be a big issue.
