State Police investigating fatal ATV crash in Town of Alma

New York State Police said they were called to County Road 38 around 10 p.m. Thursday.

ALMA, N.Y. — One person died and another was injured in an ATV crash that happened Thursday night in the Town of Alma.

New York State Police said they were called to County Road 38 around 10 p.m. Thursday. That's where an ATV had to swerve to avoid an oncoming vehicle, causing the ATV to flip over multiple times.

The passenger, 25-year-old Zachary J. Barnett of Wellsville, was declared dead at the scene.

The driver of the ATV, 26-year-old Jesse M. Bestine of Wellsville, was first taken to Jones Memorial Hospital, then moved to Strong Hospital in Rochester for what state police called non-life-threatening injuries.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

"An all-terrain vehicle (ATV) is defined as a motorized off-highway vehicle designed to travel on four low-pressure or non-pneumatic tires, having a seat designed to be straddled by the operator and handlebars for steering control," according to the ATV Safety website.
