DUNKIRK, N.Y. - A fight involving juveniles at the Chautauqua County Fair led to an early closure Saturday night and increased patrols for the fair's final day on Sunday, according to Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace.
Gerace said a 12-year-old girl was knocked to the ground during the fight, which involved multiple scuffles. At one point, an estimated 200 people were either engaged in the fight or watched from a distance, and when the crowd did not disperse, officials decided to close the fair.
Fair Board President Dave Wilson said the disturbance simply escalated too far, leading to the precautionary closure. The fair re-opened without incident on Sunday.
Dunkirk Police, Fredonia Police and the New York State Police assisted with the response on Saturday night.
