Small fire at Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant

A generator at the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station caught fire Thursday, causing employees to be evacuated.

Lewiston, N.Y. -- A generator at the Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station caught fire Thursday, causing employees to be evacuated.

The small fire started shortly after 1 p.m. and caused no injuries, according to New York Power Authority spokesperson Steve Gossett.

The fire has been put out, but the unit was still smoldering at 3:30 p.m., Gossett said.

Eleven of the power plant's 13 units are still functioning, enough to handle current energy demands, he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Gossett said there's no reason to think that increased demands on the system due to the recent hot weather had anything to do with the fire.

He also said there is no evidence of an explosion, which was indicated in initial reports on social media.
