BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Buffalo's Skyway is more than 50 years old and the state Department of Transportation is starting major maintenance work.
However, Congressman Brian Higgins continues to be vocal about tearing the expensive structure down.
Maintaining the structure could cost up to 68 million dollars over the next 25 years, a recent study showed.
Monday, crews were getting the Skyway ready for maintenance work by putting up nets for when they fix its columns to make sure nothing falls below into the Canalside area.
2 On Your Side's Claudine Ewing spoke to Higgins Monday about the Skyway.
"Would it cost more to replace it than to repair it?" she asked.
Higgins replied, "No, Claudine, it would not. To replace it with a shorter span lift bridge, you could accomplish it with considerably less. It is deemed by engineers to be structurally deficient and functionally obsolete."
