AMHERST, N.Y. -- Skaters whipped around the Northtown Center Saturday for the third annual Short Track Speed Skating event.
The competition brought together 150 skaters from around the country and Canada. The stakes for each skater were high as the race is a qualifier for the road to international events.
In particular, skaters raced to qualify for the World University Games to be held in Kazakhstan in January 2017, meet director Cathleen Heyworth said. She added the games in January are the the winter version of the World University Games held in Buffalo in 1992.
Those who missed the action Saturday can watch Sunday from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. There is no charge for spectators.
The Northtown Center is located at 1615 Amherst Manor Dr. in Williamsville.
