BUFFALO, N.Y. — Tenants at the Towne Gardens apartment complex are displaced after a sewer backup resulted in a burst pipe inside a unit Tuesday morning.

A Facebook live video posted Tuesday by user Nate Boyd shows the scene inside the apartment following the incident.

The video has already racked up over 100 shares. Many leaving comments expressing their frustration about the situation.

Majority Leader and Buffalo Common Council member Leah Halton-Pope spoke with the tenant after being alerted of the incident Tuesday afternoon. She says the tenant was instructed to clean up the mess herself.

“They came in with a mop, a bucket, and some bleach spray. They couldn’t handle the smell so I don’t know how anyone could think that that would be the responsibility of a tenant,” Halton-Pope said.

At the end of the day, it’s up to the property to clean it up says the councilwoman said.

“It’s on the owners. The property management, they were hired to manage the property on behalf of the owners, and so it’s ultimately their responsibility," Halton-Pope said.

Halton-Pope says that after some calls to the city, county, state, and housing officials, the mess is being taken care of. The tenant and her child will be set up in a hotel for a few days.
