JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Two men have died after a small plane crashed around 2 p.m. in Jamestown.
According to officials in Chautauqua County, the crash happened at the Chautauqua County Jamestown Airport.
Officials identified the victims Tuesday night. The pilot is 52-year-old Roger Jay Ryall of Toronto Canada, and the plane’s passenger is 52-year-old David J Hughes of British Columbia.
When crews arrived on the scene, officials said they discovered the aircraft fully engulfed by fire with an onboard parachute deployed. After quickly extinguishing the flames, an immediate search for victims began with local law enforcement using drones and receiving aid from STAT Medevac.
The aircraft is preliminarily believed to be a Cirrus SR-22 with tail number C-GNMT,
The plane was flying from Erie, Pa. to an airstrip in Waterloo, Ontario when the plane stopped to refuel in Jamestown, shortly after taking off, when the crash happened.
Officials said a full investigation will be conducted by the NTSB and FAA,
The airport has since reopened to aviation traffic following the incident. An investigation by the NTSB and FAA continues.
