National School Bus Safety Week

The week brings awareness to bus safety and even has a poster contest.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The third full week of October is recognized as National School Bus Safety Week. Local leaders in Western New York gathered on Tuesday to talk about bus safety efforts in Erie County. 

They said drivers must be careful while driving. They need to slow down when a school bus flashes its red lights and stop once the school bus stop are has extended. 

"We encourage everyone in the city of Buffalo to ensure that you are completely vigilant and don't sacrifice the well-being of our precious cargo for the sake of convenience," COO of Buffalo Public Schools David Hills said. "We prioritize safety we ask that everyone in this community also prioritize student safety by following the law and being extra vigilant." 

According to the Erie County Clerk, 2000 drivers in Buffalo received warning letters for passing a bus.

The highlight of National School Bus Safety Week is a poster contest. Thousands of school districts in over 40 states participate in local and state-level competitions to select artwork that showcases school bus safety-related themes and promotes school bus safety. The winning posters are used to promote safer school transportation for everyone. Posters can be drawn anytime between October 1, 2024 through April 1, 2025. The posters must be submitted to state directors by April 18, 2025.
