Rainbow Bridge closed for hours

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- The Rainbow Bridge shut down U.S. bound traffic for around two hours Sunday evening due to an emergency situation.

Matt Davison, a spokesperson for the Rainbow Bridge, said a man fell off of the bridge. The bridge closed to traffic as emergency responders arrived on the scene.

Officials have not provided information about the condition of the person who fell in the water.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection handled the incident, Davison said. Department of Transportation (DOT) officials were also involved in the emergency response, he said.

Traffic stayed open heading into Canada. A recorded message from U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated the bridge closed due to "unforeseen circumstances."

The bridge was open again to the public later Sunday evening. At 6 p.m., the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition reported 30-60 minute delays getting into the U.S. from Canada.
