BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Christmas season continues for some Western New Yorkers as January 6th is Three Kings Day. A holiday largely celebrated in Hispanic Cultures. It observes the day when three wise men brought gifts to baby Jesus.
Pucho's Social Club is gearing up for its annual Three Kings Day celebration, which is also known as Día de los Reyes. A holiday that is celebrated every January 6th.
Although the birth of Jesus is celebrated on Christmas Day, the three kings didn't actually reach him until twelve days later, which is why Three Kings Day is celebrated after the holiday.
There's so many popular traditions during this holiday, like gift-giving and eating large meals. But at the Pucho's Social Club, it's a combination of both. Wilmer Olivencia Jr. is the club's board president.
He said they are expecting around 350 families and kids to join their annual celebration this year as well as a special appearance.
"The three wise men will be hopefully flying in from Puerto Rico, as long as they don't have any delays. They'll present the kids with their gifts. They walk around take pictures with the kids. They provide them with a little candy or something like that. To say something like, 'Hey, how are you doing?' and say 'Happy Kings Day.' And then it's just all about music, food, dance and having a great time," Olivencia said.
Olivencia said this is another way to keep the spirit of the holidays alive in Western New York and embrace the Latino cultural tradition in the Queen City.
