New cars would require speed warning systems, under proposed state law

A New York City Assembly member wants a requirement that new cars come with an audio and visual alert when drivers travel 10 mph over the speed limit.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — A proposed state law would alert drivers when they are speeding.

A New York City Assembly member, Robert Carroll, wants to require new cars to come with an audio and visual alert when drivers travel 10 mph over the speed limit. He says that the move would reduce crashes.

The European Union requires all new cars to come with the technology, called an "intelligent speed assistance system."

Bill No. A10712 would require vehicles manufactured or registered across New York State to have have that advanced safety technology starting on Jan. 1, 2029. There would be exemptions for some vehicles, including emergency vehicles.

"The relationship between speeding and increased traffic fatalities is well established," the bill said. "A report from the New York State Comptroller found that of the 1,175 motor vehicle fatalities in 2022, one-third involved speeding."

The bill goes on to say that road deaths could drop by as much as 20 percent, according to the European Transport Safety Council. Another report cited in the bill, which comes from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, said speeding numbers could drop by as much as 80 percent.
