Popular Cheektowaga hockey rink reopens with new safety measures

After successful inspections, the rink reopens with new safety measures on Friday, January 5.

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. — Cheektowaga code enforcement inspectors conducted their final inspections at Holiday Twin Rinks on Friday morning prior to their reopening.

The Holiday Twin Rinks opened back up on Friday, January 5 after more than 100 people were sent to nearby hospitals from carbon monoxide levels ranging between 200 to 400 ppm in the facility on Dec. 27.

Supervising code enforcement officer in Cheektowaga, Rick Coburn, says the owners of Holiday Twin Rinks have made substantial repairs for the last week, and that includes a new heat exchanger, filtration systems, and new detection systems.

Building supervisor for the rinks, Jim Bender, told 2 On Your Side that he was made aware of detector issues before the carbon monoxide outbreak.

After the realization for the need of better safety measures, the Holiday Twin Rinks made an update to their Facebook of what changes have been made.

"As you may be aware, Carbon Monoxide issues are not unheard of within ice rink facilities, and even though this is our 1st accident in five decades of continuous operations, this single incident is still one too many," as stated in the post by a Holiday Twin Rinks employee.
